Évora, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is one of the most beautiful historic cities in the world. It is located on the Alentejo plain, and is known as the Museum-City because of its magnificent monuments – palaces, chapels, convents, churches and its majestic Gothic cathedral -, some of which date back to the Roman period. Its historic centre is surrounded by medieval walls, which are more than 3 km long. Its streets bear witness to the presence of the Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians, which shows that it has been occupied for centuries.

The Plaza de Giraldo, the central square in Évora, is a symbolic homage to Geraldo Geraldes, known by the nickname, “Sem Pavor” (Fearless), who conquered the city from the Muslims in 1167. It is surrounded by typical neoclassical and romantic facades, in which wrought-iron balconies predominate, and contains some important monuments, such as the Chafariz – a marble fountain with 8 jets of water that represent the 8 streets that lead to here, and with a bronze imperial crown on the top -, the church of Santo Antão and the Arcades. The cafés with their terraces are really inviting, while its restaurants offer a gastronomic overview of the region. It has been a National Monument since 1910.
