City of Évora

Évora, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is one of the most beautiful historic cities in the world. It is located on the Alentejo plain, and is known as the Museum-City because of its magnificent monuments – palaces, chapels, convents, churches and its majestic Gothic cathedral -, some of which date back to the Roman period. Its historic centre is surrounded by medieval walls, which are more than 3 km long. Its streets bear witness to the presence of the Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians, which shows that it has been occupied for centuries.

2.- Plaza de Giraldo – Stage 1

The Plaza de Giraldo, the central square in Évora, is a symbolic homage to Geraldo Geraldes, known by the nickname, “Sem Pavor” (Fearless), who conquered the city from the Muslims in 1167. It is surrounded by typical neoclassical and romantic facades, in which wrought-iron balconies predominate, and contains some important monuments, such as the Chafariz – a marble fountain with 8 jets of water that represent the 8 streets that lead to here, and with a bronze imperial crown on the top -, the church of Santo Antão and the Arcades. The cafés with their terraces are really inviting, while its restaurants offer a gastronomic overview of the region. It has been a National Monument since 1910.

Visit the city: Roman Temple

The Roman Temple in Évora is one of the most grandiose and best preserved temples in all the Iberian Peninsula. In 1986 it was included on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. This example of Roman religious architecture, located on the Acropolis, was built at the beginning of the 1st century A.C. From the entire complex, the podium has survived up to the present day, and this is practically complete, as well as a large part of the Corinthian colonnade, complete on its northern side, with its respective architrave.
